One of the worst things a CIO can do is to delay bimodal delivery platform, according to Gartner's annual global CIO survey. A bimodal capability that marries the rock solid with the agile is essential for organisations to survive and thrive in the digital era. CIOs, working with the executive team, are tasked to reset the business model to enable all business units, to apply this approach.

For IT, the challenge is heightened as the model aims the ICT organisation to be in the mode of ‘transforming while performing’. Spaziani will distil lessons from organisations that are already delivering this bimodal capability, and even paving the way for multimodal operations.

The killer app for today’s CIOs

Dawie Olivier believes the killer app for today’s CIOs has nothing to do with technology or widgets. It is the ability to transform the organisation –ICT and beyond–to be able to adapt to anything coming down the track.

Willoughby will discuss the findings from a research paper on this topic he co-authored with Tom Soderstrom, chief technology and innovation officer at NASA-Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). Willoughby distils lessons learned from the NASA-JPL programme. He will zero in on how a new approach to technology innovation is being applied to the Mars Exploration Program.

More importantly, Willoughby will show how this approach is being applied now in New Zealand organisations he has been involved with – particularly the district health boards, and in his current organisation, Downer.
