Facebook CIO is keynote speaker at CIO Summit in June

Tim Campos and IDC chief analyst Frank Gens topbill international speakers in NZ's top event for IT executives.

Tim Campos, CIO of Facebook will share his insights on leading ICT at the world’s largest social network, at the CIO Summit in Auckland on June 25 and 26 at the SkyCity Convention Centre. The conference, now in its sixth year, is the largest gathering of CIOs and senior IT executives in New Zealand. It is organised by
CIO magazine, IDC and Conferenz.

Campos joined Facebook in August 2010, from KLA-Tenco, where he was also CIO and vice president of information technology. Campos has an MBA from Columbia University and a degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the University of California at Berkeley.

He says his IT team has benefitted from operating inside a ground-breaking enterprise. "We've been fortunate enough to be right next to this huge source of new ideas and innovation - Facebook the product - and those new ideas and innovation are bleeding over to how we think and manage IT at this company," he says in an interview with CIO.

"Facebook is all about innovation. To be the best, we need to innovate. And for people to innovate, they need the freedom to make mistakes - it's part of the learning process."

The social networking company has been able to flourish in the "cloud computing world", he says.

“We are able to adopt to that across the board - 70 percent of our apps are running on the cloud, and allows us to move faster and more productive as a company."

A key lesson he has learned is to “embrace this change holistically not just to look at one specific area and adopt it.” The benefits are realised “once you are doing it across the board.”

The theme for the CIO Summit is: The leadership imperative: Business growth, agility and collaboration.

Another keynote speaker is Frank Gens, senior vice president and chief analyst of IDC, and the author of IDC Predictions, the company’s annual forecast of major changes in the development and use of technology.

Gens says the ICT industry is in the midst of a "once every 20 to 25 years" shift to a new technology platform for growth and innovation. His presentation will provide a compelling strategic view of the next stages of the key global technology trends that will define the future of enterprise and consumer IT.
