    Save the CIO, save the enterprise! It might not be the catchiest slogan, but there's more than a little truth in it.
    Several Fortune 500 companies are eliminating their corporate CIO positions. They plan to move IT into the business units (BU), on the theory that an IT staff that isn't distracted by corporate initiatives can provide better support for BU priorities. A minimal corporate IT staff will support only corporate functions, such as HR, Finance and Legal. An IT leadership group (ITLG) composed of the BU CIOs will establish IT direction, create standards and allocate resources for projects across all departments.

    Want to lock in some job security in IT over the next five years? Then make sure you're poised to move into cloud computing or mobile application development. That's where the IT jobs are expected to be, according to 2000 IT professionals recently surveyed by IBM.
    IBM's annual global Tech Trends survey identified cloud computing and mobile application development as the hottest tech trends and most sought-after IT skills for the next five years. An overwhelming majority of survey respondents (91 percent) expect cloud computing to overtake on-premise computing as the primary IT delivery model by 2015. More than half (55 percent) of survey respondents believe that in the same amount of time, the need to develop applications for mobile devices (such as Android, iPhone, iPad and PlayBook) will far surpass the need to develop software for traditional PCs and servers. These trends will impact IT jobs and the skills needed to do them.

  • Social networking ever more critical to job search

    Jobvite, a maker of recruiting software, released the results of its third-annual social recruiting survey, and the findings underscore the many reasons job seekers need to incorporate online social networking into their job searches.
    Jobvite asked 825 HR and recruiting professionals about the extent to which they use social networking websites in their recruiting process to find and vet candidates for jobs. Their answers indicate that they view social networks as a viable channel for sourcing high-quality candidates and that they plan to increase their use of social networking websites in their recruiting efforts this year. (Only about 3 percent of survey respondents were Jobvite customers.)

  • The thawing begins

    As bad as 2009 was for employment in the US - and it was truly terrible - the CIO job market picked up during the latter half of the year, according to executive recruiters who believe the increase in CIO job openings and search activity is a positive sign of what's to come in 2010.
    "The bottom was reached in the first quarter [of 2009], and it started to turn around mid-summer," says Mark Anderson, president of ExecuNet. "Right now we're definitely seeing the market rebound for CIOs and [for executives] across the board. We're seeing about a 23 percent increase in the number of jobs being posted in our private network from the fourth quarter of 2008 to the fourth quarter of 2009."

    When it comes to hiring staff for his technology department, Joseph Seibert has a soft spot for candidates who are underdogs. He admires IT professionals who've charged ahead in their careers despite starting at a disadvantage.
    In the past, Seibert has grown so excited about an underdog's personality that he says he has made the mistake of advancing a candidate through the interview process who had a great story but who was not right for the job. Seibert, now senior vice president and CIO of The New York Times Company, says the lesson he's learned from that mistake is to know himself: to be aware of his tendency to get excited and to keep his excitement in check so that it doesn't undermine his effort to hire the best person for the job. It's practiced advice that all hiring managers can benefit from.
