  • An out-of-this-world content management challenge

This week, NASA's Phoenix Mars lander will enter the Martian atmosphere at nearly 13,000 miles per hour, complete a complex seven-minute series of events, then land on the red planet to begin a three-month mission to explore Martian soil and ice. Some 500,000 people are expected to watch this on the Web: Few of those people will be more interested than Jeanne Holm, chief knowledge architect for NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and one of the IT leaders responsible for making sure all the images and video from this high-profile mission get managed and delivered to NASA staffers and the public without a hitch.

  • The law discovers technology

The final witness in last year's C7 trial in Australia was, fittingly, neither an economist nor an accountant but an electronic sleuth named Adam Daniel. With the case generating an astonishing 85,000 electronic documents, Daniel was called to assess whether the Seven Network had backdated one of them to bolster its claim that rivals had colluded to destroy its failed C7 pay-TV platform.
Considered exotic just a few years ago, forensic examinations of crucial electronic documents are now common in corporate litigation. The same is true of drawn-out "discovery" processes, whereby teams of lawyers and technologists comb emails, reports, presentations and even text messages to uncover any "smoking gun" information.

  • The case for outsourcing email management

When global staffing firm Adecco Group began an effort one year ago to consolidate and outsource its five data centers into one, Dave Bossi came to the realisation that moving the data center would also move three separately managed Microsoft Exchange email servers of different versions and a fourth legacy email technology-with potentially huge disruption to 10,000 email users. Bossi, the North American vice president of IT, thought this might be an opportunity to rethink the company’s email strategy. “Email tends to get lost in the mix. It becomes an afterthought,” Bossi says. Unless, of course, something goes wrong.
Bossi’s case for outsourcing broke down like this: If Adecco moved the email servers to a separate outsourced provider, the email systems would be unaffected in the event of any trouble (like network overloads) at Adecco’s data center. Having a dedicated email provider also makes administering email accounts, managing servers and handling frequent software patches more efficient and less dependent on other data center resources. It shifts the responsibility for malware protection to a specialist-and eliminates the need to manage anti-malware appliances. CIO Alwin Brunner liked Bossi’s logic. Adecco is consolidating its four email platforms into one, which is hosted by USA.net (separate from Adecco’s outsourced data center that IBM manages).

  • Taking the big leap

More than a year ago, Peter Burggraaff met the representatives of HCL as CIO of Farmers when the outsourcing company bid for a contract with the retail group.
HCL did not get the contract, but Burggraaff stayed in touch with them. “I felt they had a huge potential in a country like this.”
