  • Suncorp IT underpins $235 million savings

    The extensive technology program required to generate annual savings of $235 million by 2013 for Suncorp-Metway's insurance business will be a continuation of the work recently finished on the integration of Promina, and be complete by next June, according to the newly promoted executive responsible for making it happen.
    Suncorp's chief information officer, Jeff Smith, was promoted in April to a newly created role as group executive of Suncorp business services, which now gives him direct control over procurement, real estate and human resources operations.

  • BNZ card technology reduces fraud

    The Bank of New Zealand says its Liquid Encryption Number (LEN) technology for preventing credit card fraud has been a success since it was first trialled on a limited basis in 2008, with the rate of fraudulent transactions from cloned credit cards in New Zealand down by 50 per cent. It is now in place in all BNZ credit and debit cards.
    The technology works by changing numbers on cards’ magnetic strips every time a transaction takes place, or an account balance is requested at an ATM.

  • ANZ tech reform gets going under renewed scrutiny

    Australia and New Zealand Banking Group has quietly kicked off an internal review of its $768 million-a-year technology operations in Australia and Asia, just two weeks after the arrival of its new chief information officer, Anne Weatherston, from the Bank of Ireland.
    The bank is looking at how to structure its technology purchasing to underpin wider operations over the next few years, including the role of its Bangalore-based software factory that employs about 4000 people.
