Opus opts for Office 365

New Zealand-based infrastructure and construction consultancy Opus has announced it is rolling out Microsoft's cloud productivity suite Office 365.
CIO Bruce Tinsley says 10 percent of the company’s 2100 global workforce is already on Office 365. The rest will be migrated by first quarter of 2013.

Kiwi internally developed BI system takes off

Business intelligence tools developed internally have the potential to be commercialised which justifies the cost of producing those tools from scratch, says Marc Michel, BCS general manager of services.
The Auckland-based firm manufactures and services baggage handling and logistics automation systems throughout the Asia Pacific. It operates and maintains airport baggage systems in all the major Australian airports except Adelaide. In 2008 BCS and FKL Logistics were selected to build Courier Post’s $50 million automated sorting centre in Highbrook.

Vodafone NZ appoints CIO

At a CIO magazine roundtable event last week David Moss told this reporter that the CIO role at Vodafone was being finalised last week. Today Vodafone confirmed his appointment.
Moss has been the acting CIO of Vodafone for the last five months, taking over from previous CIO Claire Govier who left in June after working at the company for two years.

Finding your true north

Two years ago, John Holley left his role as CIO of the Auckland Regional Council to pursue his passion. Although Holley started his career as a programmer at Massey University, he says that what he most enjoys about working is interacting with people and growing teams.
Following his three-year tenure as the group ICT manager at the Council, and a further three months as acting general manager of operations — Holley started his own IT consultancy, and now works as the general manager of operations at loyalty marketing company Visible Results.

TeamTalk hires CTO

Wellington-based telco TeamTalk has established a new group CTO role, and brought onboard Jamie Baddeley from FX Networks to take it on.
The CTO role will oversee technology projects and strategy across TeamTalk’s wireless business and its fibre business (CityLink). Previously this was conducted by senior IT managers across the group.

Govt CIO to review publicly accessible systems

The State Services Commission has ordered Government CIO Colin MacDonald to undertake an urgent review of all pubicly accessible systems operated by the government.
A statement sent yesterday evening from Iain Rennie, commissioner and head of State Services says MacDonald will seek assurances from all government agencies that their current security systems are up to scratch .

Prime Minister opens Orion Health's Grafton HQ

Prime Minister John Key officiated at the opening of Orion Health's new headquarters in Auckland yesterday.
The facility is located on Grafton Road, at the former Southern Cross building, and features a 4400 square metre open plan environment.

'Bulletproof' network a must before unified comms: Massey Uni

Massey University has completed a network infrastructure refresh on its three main campuses in Auckland, Wellington, and Palmerston North.
The three campuses are connected over the Kiwi Advanced Research and Education Network (Karen), but the telecommunication and networking infrastructure on the actual campuses were reaching the end of life.

Global 'census' to put face on big data

The Human Face of Big Data (HFOBD) is a crowdsourcing project that will attempt to shed light on how people create and interact with the information in the world around them.
From September 26 HFOBD is collecting data from the smartphones of participants in more than 20 countries (including New Zealand) to create a snapshot of how data is used in five categories; health, environment, crime, society, and business.

iPhone 5 NZ availability and pricing

Apple unveiled the latest iPhone 5 this morning in San Francisco, although weeks of leaked images and videos meant there were really no surprises in the feature set.
According to Apple the iPhone 5 will be available in New Zealand from September 28, and comes in three models; with 16 GB of storage (at $1,049), 32 GB ($1,199), and 64 GB ($1,349).

Christchurch-based CropLogic won IBM's startup incubation competition, SmartCamp Australia New Zealand, IBM announced last night.
Of the five finalists CropLogic was the only New Zealand-based company.

Beca: Transparent policy key to BYOD

To support its growth in key Australian and Asian markets, engineering firm Beca is investing heavily on its IT infrastructure. The move to its new office on Auckland's Pitt Street coincided with a refresh of its networking hardware, and earlier this year it announced the deployment of an AT&T VPN.
Beca is also one of the largest companies in New Zealand to implement and support a bring your own device (BYOD) policy, which group IT manager Andy Shields says gives the company an edge over its competitors.
