Double-sided printing for BNZ ATM recipts

BNZ is about to deploy NCR double sided paper receipt printers in its local ATMS. The printers, called 2 Sided Thermal (2ST), allow businesses to print on both sides of a thermal paper receipt, reducing paper consumption by as much as 45 per cent.

NCR is a US based ATM provider that has operated for 125 years.

BNZ will use 2ST printers at more than three dozen NCR ATMs around the country.

BNZ ATM channel manager Paul Johnson says the bank estimates it will save up to 30 per cent in receipt roll paper and costs.

“This is because more of every roll can be used which eliminates waste, as the roll can be used up completely. If one roll runs out then the ATM will switch to the next roll. This is in line with our commitment to sustainability.”

Currently more than half of BNZ’s ATM downtime is due to low-level maintenance tasks, often performed by branch staff, such as replacing receipt rolls and clearing cards or paper jams. With interactive full-motion video operator panels, the SelfServ ATMs will allow BNZ's staff o fix more faults the first time and do so more quickly.

Johnson also says the bank has adopted the receipt printers as standard on all new ATMs it purchases.

“BNZ runs a maintenance programme where 10 per cent of the oldest ATMs are replaced each year. Thos 10 per cent from now on will be replaced with ATMS that include the printers.”

The first ATM using the technology will be installed in Wellington. BNZ will then replace the oldest ATMs in its country wide network.

“All areas are considered and will be updated with the new technology, regardless of geographic location.”

He believes that BNZ is the first bank in New Zealand, Australia and the Pacific Islands to install in this new technology.

“We understand that other banks are planning to introduce this capability.”
