New Zealand organisations see IoT as strategic to their business as a means to compete more effectively.
IDC says cloud transition remains the number one digital transformation (DX) initiative across New Zealand, but deployments around the Internet of Things (IoT) are “picking up speed gradually”.
These deployments incorporate cloud, analytics and security capabilities, reports IDC, citing initial results from its 2016 Global IoT Decision Maker Survey.
The survey, now in its third year, asks enterprise IT and business decision-makers about their perception of IoT as well as their plans for deploying IoT solutions.
The survey was conducted in July and August 2016 and includes over 4,500 respondents from more than 25 countries worldwide.
The respondents came from a wide array of industries including manufacturing, retail, utilities, government, health, and finance.
IDC says over 160 organisations in New Zealand participated in the survey.
Of these, 11 per cent have launched IoT solutions, with an additional 55 per cent looking to deploy these in the next 12 months as cloud and mobility dominate the digital transformation (DX) landscape.
As well, half of the New Zealand organisations see IoT as strategic to their business as a means to compete more effectively.
"Setting strategies, finding budgets, and supporting IoT solutions have contributed to an ongoing tussle between line of business executives (LOBs) and CIOs,” says Hugh Ujhazy, associate vice president of IoT and telecoms for Asia Pacific (excluding Japan).
“In New Zealand, the line of business and the C-Suite are driving the IOT direction,” says Ujhazy. “IT departments remain significant contributors but the business outcomes are overwhelming technology choices.”
"This year, we see confirmation that vendors who lead with a strong ecosystem of partners and the ability to demonstrate real ROI are the ones who will be considered as critical partners in an organisation’s IoT investment," notes Monica Collier, research manager, telecommunications, IDC New Zealand.
"We also note that traditional IT vendors and analytics providers are leading the discussion around IoT solutions."
