CIOs and their teams are winners across industries in the latest salary guide

ICT departments are expanding, with the focus on single page applications, cloud development and big data projects, reports Hays.

“Employers have a positive outlook for the coming year, with 46 per cent expecting to increase permanent headcount and 76 per cent expecting business activity to rise,” according to the latest
Hays Salary Guide.

The IT department will lead this headcount expansion, followed by project management, operational management, marketing and sales.

The report covers salary and recruiting trends for over 1000 roles in Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington.

The recruitment firm says 451 New Zealand employers, representing 374,007 employees, were interviewed for this year’s report.

Strong economic growth and employer confidence in many sectors in New Zealand will lead to hiring activity and more permanent jobs in the year ahead, but Hays warns New Zealanders not to expect big salary increases during this period.

The recruitment firm says 23 per cent of employees can expect a salary increase of 3 per cent or more in their next review. However the vast majority of workers (68 per cent) will receive an increase of less than 3 per cent.

Recruitment activity in New Zealand’s IT market is positive, with the focus on single page applications, cloud development and big data projects.

The ability to create an application attractive enough to draw a target audience who provide their personal details is tied closely with cloud deployable applications and platforms such as AWS and Azure, the report states.

Scalability is a top consideration as mobile and big data use grows and the cloud platform must reach an ever-increasing target audience.

Similar to last year, quality candidates at all levels are attracting multiple job offers, reports Hays.

Senior software engineers are in demand in the Microsoft market. The need for high-level design and architecture skills for cloud and single page applications is driving hiring but companies want candidates with a proven track record in research and development to manage their change programmes.

Developers able to communicate across the business and gravitate to leadership/architecture roles remain in demand.

Hays forecasts rising demand for entry and intermediate developers in the next six months as the people who carried out the bulk of the change work move into maintenance and bug fixing.

Developers able to communicate across the business and gravitate to leadership/architecture roles remain in demand.

Candidates with both communication skills and technical capabilities and those with rich UI (user interface) technologies experience are also highly sought but talent quality is mixed, according to the report.

Salaries are rising and employers will pay even more for good candidates. In the testing market, demand remains strong for candidates with automation skills.

Big financial sector projects have also resulted in consultancies paying higher salaries to local candidates with strong automation testing skills.
