Managing the new supply chain of information will require new skill sets. Thus, says Thompson, people are mission critical too.

Roles and responsibilities in data centres will grow, and universities will have to foster graduates for this evolving environment.

Thompson names at least six roles that are important:

Security officers who will be responsible for securing data outside the traditional data centre; defining/ applying corporate security standards and ensuring regulatory and compliance expectations are met.

IT managers who will architect, deploy, monitor, manage and optimise a global supply chain of business information.

Big data scientists who will analyse the data and make recommendations to the business but they do not own the data or the business decisions.

Network engineers who will architect, deploy, monitor, manage and optimise the flow of data into and out of the data centre.

Security engineers who will ensure security at and between end points, and communicate security issues when they occur and how to resolve these.

Process engineers who will develop processes and tools to manage and or control Internet of Thingsdevices and software updates.
