Aaron Overington, IT manager for Spectrum Care Trust Board in Auckland, is taking a three-month secondment, taking the same role at another charity.
During this period, he will be working as ICT manager with SILC Charitable Trust (Supported Individualised Lifestyle Choices) in Tauranga. Like Spectrum, the charity provides services to people with disabilities.
The temporary appointment arose from a funding program offered to NGOs by the Department of Internal Affairs, Overington tells CIO New Zealand. “The program aims to strengthen community organisations and encourage cooperation between not-for-profits, the government and the corporate sector.”

Overington will complete a comprehensive review of SILC’s business systems and processes, and develop an “overarching IT strategy” for the charitable trust.
“As a business technology leader, I feel privileged to be able to share my 20-plus years’ experience with an organisation and a sector that’s close to my heart,” says Overington of the government-sponsored community internship. “The secondment offers both parties an opportunity to learn from each other and further enhance the lives of the people we support.”
Overington joined Spectrum Care more than five years ago, his first foray in the not for profit sector. Among his projects there were designing and implementing Microsoft SharePoint Enterprise and replacing multiple databases and spreadsheets with Microsoft CRM 4. He also deployed IT training to a diverse workforce of 900.
Prior to Spectrum Care, he had worked in IT, marketing, finance and general management roles in different industries including freight and distribution, market research and aviation.
Mark Bennett's parents were ministers of The Salvation Army. So it was a full circle of sorts when he took on the role of IS manager for the organisation.
