Lenovo has entered the Windows 8.1 tablet market with the 8-inch Miix2 tablet, which starts at US$299 and has an Intel Atom chip code-named Bay Trail.

The Miix2 weighs 350 milligrams and is 8.35 millimeters thick. It has about seven hours of battery life, the company said in a specification sheet.

The tablet will be available at the end of this month in the U.S., according to Lenovo. With a cover for the tablet, it will be priced at $349.99.

The Miix2 screen can display images at a 1280 x 800 pixel resolution, which is consistent with the other 8-inch Bay Trail and Windows 8.1 tablets. The tablet has a 2-megapixel front camera and a 5-megapixel back camera.

The Bay Trail chip has four processor cores and on-chip graphics technology to improve video rendition. Miix2 has storage capacity of up to 128GB, and a MicroSD slot expands storage capacity by 32GB.

Other features include 2GB of low-power DDR3 memory and Bluetooth 4.0. Optional 3G connectivity will be available in some countries.

The tablet will come with Microsoft Office Home & Student 2013. Lenovo did not immediately comment on worldwide availability.

The Miix2 joins a growing market of Windows 8.1 tablets with Intel's Bay Trail chips, with starting prices ranging from $299 to $350. The other 8-inch Windows 8.1 tablets include Dell's Venue 8 Pro, which starts at $299, and Toshiba's Encore, which starts at $329.99. Asustek Computer and Hewlett-Packard have announced 10-inch Bay Trail tablets.

Intel this week said 10 Bay Trail tablets and hybrids with Windows 8.1 and Android will reach shelves by next month.
